United Way Responds to Local Hurricane Katrina Needs

Harrisonburg, VA- (September 16, 2005) United Way of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County Board of Directors has approved the use of $10,000 from the Community Care Fund to create the Hurricane Katrina Response Fund. This grant from the United Way Community Care Fund has been made available immediately to local agencies helping victims in our community. ?The board understands how Hurricane Katrina can impact organizations locally and we want to have funds available to aid in serving evacuees who resettle in our community,? says Jeff Walker, United Way Board President.

In addition to these funds, United Way has made available the opportunity to designate to the Hurricane Katrina Response Fund though the annual Community Impact campaign. ?Gifts to support the Hurricane Katrina Response Fund are critical, but such gifts should not take the place of United Way contributions. Local needs have not disappeared, and in fact may be greater because of Katrina,? comments Betsy Hay, Executive Director. ?The continued support of our community is vital to sustaining local services for persons right here at home,? says Kelly Adams, Resource Development & Communications Director for the United Way.

United Way encourages people to support both Hurricane Katrina efforts and the efforts to maintain aid to those people locally who experience trauma of a more personal nature.
