Pitch In for Disaster Relief

October 2, 2017 | by

“When something big happens in our community that has a negative effect on other people, we want to make sure that we do what we can to show them that we support them, that we care — knowing that people would do that for us as well,” -Laura Toni-Holsinger, Executive Director

Laura’s words about the recent natural disasters around the world express the resilience and willingness of our community to help others cope with these devastating situations. Realizing that distance kept us from contributing hands-on support, we organized ways to contribute financially to our friends’ impacts by these storms and earthquakes.

The spirit of support could be felt throughout the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. We partnered with James Madison University and the Athletic Department to spread the word about helping our friends at United Way of Greater Huston.

As we grimly recall, the weeks following Hurricane Harvey brought news of other impending storms and natural disasters. In response, we paired up with JMU again to host an incredible concert at Wilson Hall on September 29th. “Pitch In” had free admission and the accepted donations to support victims of Hurricane Harvey, Irma, and Maria, earthquakes in Mexico, and wildfires in the West.

We sincerely appreciate each individual who was able to partake in the relief efforts. It is because of a caring culture of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County that we are able to extend our help to others. Please continue to check in to our website to learn how you can offer support within our community. #LIVEUNITED

If you would still like to contribute to the United Way Disaster Recovery Fund, your donations are welcomed and appreciated!
